FanExpo 2016: Ming-Na Wen

There is a lot to be excited about for self-described Geek, Ming-Na Weh. While she has had some interesting roles in her career, having been a regular on ER and voicing Disney’s Mulan, the last few must have been a real thrill for her to land. She played Camille Wray on Stargate Universe, the comparatively short-lived follow-up to the popular Stargate series’ SG-1 and Atlantis. She then went on to guest star on Eureka as U.S. Senator Michaela Wen. Most recently however, she was positively delighted to be cast as Agent Melinda ”The Cavalry” May on Joss Whedon’s project, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“I am one of you guys when it comes to this stuff and so when I go to work every day, even when it’s at 3:30 in the morning and I feel like crap, I get so excited because it is an incredible sandbox to be in! I think the reason Marvel is so good at connecting to the people is because we’re telling human stories in a fantastical World. It’s about humanity, about connection & family, and learning whether you can trust and believe in people when they’ve turned on you, and all those elements. And dealing with your own inner demons, which a lot of these characters deal with… Plus explosions and fight scenes and the humour!”

FanExpo 2016: James and Oliver Phelps

Potterites poured into the panel: Staves were stored and hoods lowered in anticipation of the Phelps Twins’ arrival. As the hour approached, many were silently casting accio sella spells, finding seats only at the far sides of the hall. My own magic (and forethought) allowed me to apparate a perfect central aisle seat at the very back. We may have arrived in town too late for Tom Felton, but there was no way I’d miss seeing the actors who played my favourite characters from the Harry Potter universe: Fred and George Weasley, played (respectively) by James and Oliver Phelps.

While differentiating between the two identical twins might not be easy, no one present could confuse them for their characters for one unmistakeable reason: They are not ginger. Schoolmates didn’t initially believe them when they said they’d been cast in the first Harry Potter movie. Not even having their hair dyed for the parts convinced them: They thought the Phelps were having them on (messing with them), and that the dye jobs were just taking it too far. The joke was on them when James and Oliver were excused from school for nine months!

Fan Expo 2016: Tyler Hoechlin

Having spent half his life in the business, starting early on the Road to Perdition, coming of age on 7th Heaven and most recently exploring his wilder side on Teen Wolf, the career of Tyler Hoechlin (the first syllable rhymes with “folk”) seems almost fated. While his chiseled jaw, piercing blue eyes and warm, easy smile may not be entirely responsible for this overall good fortune, they certainly warranted the no-marriage-proposals warning that the MC issued before he took the stage (The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder had to fend off a number last year).

In the wide field of supernatural teen dramas, Teen Wolf stands out for its depth and maturity. Being no stranger to the genre, I was skeptical of a show entitled Teen Wolf. After a single episode however, I found myself remarkably willing to continue researching the subject. How could I possibly write about the dark and mysterious character of Derrick Hale we meet in the first season? I needed to keep watching – to learn more about the character of course! It seems I am far from the only one to have this kind of reaction to the show.

…21st Century Shopping

So after deciding I was too lazy to step out of the house to look for kid’s toys, I had a look at what Amazon had to offer. At first, I had to filter my search with specifications to get a selection of kid’s toys. I afterward realized that all the other toys they had to offer were rather interesting, but we will get to that later.
First off, I have a serious question to ask you, dear readers: why on earth to people still leave the house to do shopping?!? Looking through what was on offer, still in my pajamas and with a cup of coffee in my hands, I found enough to make any child happy!

Or so I thought.
Experimenting with one particular girl, whom I have been out shopping with, I saw that her eyes did not light up as much as they did when she had shelves filled with toys all around her. Sure, there was a great selection of toys that lit up my computer screen with colors, especially pink, and she really did get excited while scrolling through all the options. I felt I had to make a purchase for her, after having tortured the poor thing with pages of dolls and the likes, and while she was happy by the end of the experiment, it was apparent that for the young ones, being at a toy store is an occasion and a present in and of itself.

I, on the other hand, beg to differ.
After letting the little girl go, I spent hours browsing through all the cool tech you can find online. The great thing about shopping online is that I can actually learn about all the stuff I see without asking a thousand questions to some poor staff member at a tech store. While shopping online, if I saw a cool gadget, I would simply check out the specs on the item specification and update my knowledge base. I spent most of the time clicking on an item I was not too familiar with, then googling its application and use.

I also avoid the embarrassment of walking out of a store empty-handed after having nagged some employee for an hour.
What I learned while surfing online about all the technological gadgets out there was mind-blowing! In my first hour, I felt as if I had been living in bubble a decade into the past, given how much I didn’t know was out there. Not only that, but I found all sorts of exciting gadgets at prices I could afford. I decided to start off by buying a drone, not really thinking about all the safety hazards of flying such a thing in my area. I did, however, take it down to the beach and had the time of my life!

By the end of my shopping spree online, I peeled my eyes off the screen, sat myself outside, and thought of how much more addictive that was to actually stepping out to shop. Afterward, I took a long walk to make sure my health was not jeopardized by the conveniences of living in the twenty-first century.

Hatch a Hatchimal!

If you can still remember the excitement of receiving a Furby or a Tamagotchi as a child, you may want to seriously consider purchasing your child a Hatchimal, the latest interactive toy on the market.

What exactly is a Hatchimal? A Hatchimal is an innovative, interactive toy, which allows your child to hatch their very own furry, interactive friend. In order to find out what their Hatchimal looks like, your child will have to wait till their egg hatches as Hatchimals come in different colors. When you purchase a Hatchimal there are two different color combinations which your egg might hatch. Once hatched, each Hatchimal progresses through three stages, baby, toddler and kid. Each of which can be repeated by resetting your child’s Hatchimal.

In order for your child’s egg to hatch, they’ll have to interact with their egg by touching their egg. A process which is sure to delight children of all ages. The more your child touches their egg, the more responsive their egg will be. Whilst in it’s egg, your child’s Hatchimal will start to make inquisitive sounds and will start to peck against their egg, in order to break their egg’s shell. If your child taps the shell of their egg, their Hatchimal will tap back in response.

If your child listens carefully, they’ll also be able to hear the gentle thud of their Hatchimal’s heart beat. Better yet your child, turns their egg upside down, they’ll be able to see their new friend’s eyes light up from inside their egg. If you’re looking for an interactive toy which offers constant surprises, it’s well worth considering purchasing a Hatchimal egg.

When the time is right, your child’s new friend will hatch out of their egg as their egg shell will break off into pieces. Typically, it takes 15-25 minutes of interactive play, for a Hatchimal to begin the hatching process. Just beware that Hatchimals only hatch once, so there’s no way to repeat the hatching experience.

Don’t fear though as your child is bound to fall in love with their new friend who can walk, talk, dance, sing, repeat phrases and play games. If your child has been begging you for a pet of their own or enjoys playing with interactive toys such as Furbys, they’ll be sure to fall in love with their very own Hatchimal. So if you’re searching for the perfect Christmas or birthday present for your little one, it’s well worth wrapping up a Hatchimal.

There are a variety of Hatchimals available. As an example, if you purchase a Pengualas egg your child will hatch a bird like creature, whilst slightly resembles a penguin. Alternatively, if you purchase a Berakeet, your child will hatch a creature which resembles a cute bird, bear hybrid.

If you’re worried that your child’s new toy will make loud sounds incessantly, don’t worry as you can turn down your child’s Hatchimal’s volume to fifty percent. Each Hatchimal also comes with a handy on, off switch so if you need a little quiet time, you can always swtich your child’s Hatchimal off and tell them that it’s sleeping or taking a nap.

Toronto ComicCon 2016: Bitten Revisited

The second season of one of Canada’s hottest new sci fi shows’ is well under way, and it is full of new surprises for Otherworld fans old and new. We here at Geek Inked were charmed once before by the handsome – and tattooed – cast members of Bitten, and couldn’t help but check in on them again. Two new female cast members joined the familiar pack-members on stage, and that could only mean one thing: Witches have come to Bear Valley!

Tammy Isbell and Tommie-Amber Pirie play witches Ruth and Paige Winterbourne

Without giving too much away, with magic comes uncertainty, and both wolf and witch families are willing to fight hard to protect their own. It was hard to disguise the chemistry between co-stars Steve Lund (Nick) and Tommie-Amber Pirie (Paige). Their characters’ romance may not be cannon, but the writers do a good job of playing on the expectations of the readers: Changing just enough to keep them guessing, and therefore have them feel just as much suspense as newer fans.

But don’t just take my word for it. Steve told us his reaction when he found out where this season is going. The cast are fans of the show themselves, and always enjoy seeing the beautiful effects. Steve says that as a result of having that knowledge, that insight into their direction:

“I have so much trust in the story itself, so I’m really excited for you guys to see the next few episodes!”

Greg Bryk is apparently obsessed with tweeting so be sure to follow him and his costars Steve Lund and Tommie-Amber Pirie on Twitter!
