With No Shave November coming to an end, the first thing most women will present their husbands, boyfriends and sons is the best shaving equipment. While the basic things in a shaving kit are a good razor with blades, a shaving brush and some shaving cream, the market today offers a wide variety for you to choose from.
Check out some of our favorite options for the bearded folks in your life!
1. The razor
There are three types of razors to choose from; a cartridge, safety and straight razor or shavette. If your son’s just starting out with shaving, it’s better to play safe and buy a cartridge razor. It’s easier to shave with and rather cheap. However, if you want to really get close, oldschool shave, we suggest buying a safety razor.
If it’s for your husband or boyfriend, then the other two options do give an ultimate shaving experience. Moreover, while shavettes and safety razors are a bit expensive, its disposable blades are cheaper than cartridge razors.
2. Shaving brush
There are different shaving brush types to choose from where the basic difference between them is an artificial and natural hair brush. There are various synthetic shaving brushes available which retain water well to provide optimal lathering capability, and is rather soft to the skin.
There are also many natural hair shaving brushes where you have to choose between a boar, badger and horse hair shaving brush. As they each feel differently against the skin, it’s left to be chosen based on comfort at using for lathering shaving cream.
Do remember that badger hair shaving brush is comparatively more expensive than other types. The reason for this is not because it’s the better of the lot, but because it’s made using rare materials as badgers are protected in most countries.
3. Shaving kit holder
While this is not an essential piece of shaving equipment, it does add some class as it’s a practical and aesthetically pleasant addition. A shaving brush and safety razor look elegant when placed in the shaving kit stand when not in use! Its better avoiding the plastic versions as it soon looks moldy with frequent contact with water.
4. Lathering products
A shave isn’t complete without a lathering product which can be a shaving cream, gel, lotion, foam or soap. You have to choose based on your individual preference as some people find the gel smoother than foam while others may prefer cream.
5. After shave
This again is a personal choice to make based on the skin type and the type of after shave your man prefers like cream, balsam or lotion. You can also choose between after shaves with or without alcohol. Whatever your choice may be, all are made to moisturize, and reduce and prevent irritation while shaving.
6. Pre shave
This may be an essential accessory after No Shave November as it prepares the skin and reduces irritation from shaving a thick beard! It’s also perfect for men with sensitive skin as it opens up the hair follicles and makes them softer to give a pleasant shaving experience.
Last but not least
You could include a pair of scissors or beard trimmer if your man naturally sports a beard or moustache, and needs to trim and groom it.
So it’s left to you to choose your arsenal for your shaving kit based on your man’s individual preferences and of course, your pocket!
